What We Built
A temporary roof over a domestic garage in Petts Wood. The structure stands on the driveway either side of the garage, carries a sheeted cover across the whole roof area, and is tied back to the main house.
The uprights standing closest to where the cars park are sheathed in high visibility padding. On a domestic drive that is not a formality. It is the difference between a reversing manoeuvre that clips a tube and one that finds it.
Why a Temporary Roof on a Job This Size
A temporary roof is usually associated with large contracts. It is just as useful on a small one, and the reasoning is identical.
The moment a roof comes off, the building underneath is open. Without cover, every wet day is a day the trades stand down, and the programme stretches by however long the weather decides. Worse, water getting into ceilings, insulation and plasterwork turns a roofing job into a redecorating job, and the homeowner pays for both.
A sheeted roof over the top removes the weather from the equation. The work carries on in the rain, the building stays dry, and the job finishes when it was supposed to rather than when the forecast allows.
A London Borough, Not Kent
Petts Wood has a BR postcode and is postally often written as Kent. Administratively it is not. It sits in the London Borough of Bromley.
That matters the moment a scaffold needs to stand on a pavement or a road, because the licence comes from Bromley as a London borough rather than from Kent County Council, with a different process and different fees. Contractors who work mainly in Kent and treat a BR postcode as Kent find that out late.
On this job the question did not arise, because the whole structure stands inside a private driveway. Nothing touched the public footway, so no highway licence was needed at all. That is worth knowing before anyone quotes for a licence you do not require.
