High-Level Access on a Listed Georgian Terrace, Mount Pleasant Road
A five-storey Georgian townhouse in the Mount Pleasant conservation area required a full independent scaffold to access the parapet and render the upper two storeys. The road frontage is narrow, so we designed a reduced-width scaffold with a cantilevered top lift to clear the bay window projections at third-floor level.
Tunbridge Wells Borough Council was notified prior to installation. The scaffold remained in position for six weeks across a full render strip and lime re-coat.

Scaffolding Across All of Tunbridge Wells
From the Edwardian detached properties on Pembury Road to the Victorian terraces along Upper Grosvenor Road, the 1950s housing in Sherwood, and the newer builds at Knights Wood and Royal Wells Park — every part of TN1 to TN4 is in our regular working area.
Historic Town Centre Properties
The Georgian and early Victorian buildings in TN1 around the town centre present access challenges that require scaffolders to think carefully about tie placement. Original sandstone surrounds and lime mortar joints cannot accept the same fixings as modern brick. We use reveal ties, friction ties, and rubber-faced fittings as standard on all historic masonry in this area. Where a tie cannot be placed without risk, we cantilever or use counterbalance systems.
Hillside and Basement Properties
The ridge-and-valley terrain across Bishops Down, Broadwater Down, and Mount Ephraim means that many properties have a lower ground level on the rear elevation than the front. Basement levels extend the effective height of the scaffold beyond what is obvious from the street. We measure all elevations during the site survey so the scaffold specification accounts for every working level — including sub-grade access for basement window replacement or damp treatment.
New Estates and Domestic Extensions
The newer developments at Knights Wood and Royal Wells Park require standard domestic scaffolds for roof repairs, loft dormers, and extension work. Modern block and brick construction in these areas accepts conventional tie methods. We provide full domestic packages covering roof access, temporary edge protection, and materials hoist platforms where ground access is restricted. All work includes a fixed-price quote from an in-person site visit.
The High Rocks Challenge
Properties in the High Rocks area at the western edge of TN3 present a genuinely unusual situation: houses built directly against natural sandstone outcrops, sometimes with the rock face forming part of a boundary wall or acting as the rear elevation's structural backing. Standard scaffold ties into a sandstone face require specialist fixings and careful torque control. Armstrong has completed scaffold work in this area and can survey these sites on request.

Tunbridge Wells Scaffolding Questions
The questions we receive most often from homeowners and contractors working in TN1 to TN4 — answered honestly, with Tunbridge Wells-specific detail.
Can scaffolding be erected against the sandstone facades on The Pantiles?
Yes, using non-invasive reveal ties and rubber-faced fittings that avoid marking the historic stone. Conservation officer approval is arranged before work begins. The Pantiles colonnade is one of the most sensitive sites in the borough, and our team has the experience to meet those requirements without compromising the stonework.
Do the steep hills in Tunbridge Wells affect scaffolding costs?
Properties on Mount Ephraim and Bishops Down often need additional standards and base compensation for gradient. This typically adds 15-20% to a flat-site equivalent quote. We assess the specific gradient at your property during the site survey so you receive an accurate fixed price rather than a figure that changes once work begins.
Does Armstrong work on the tall Georgian townhouses along Mount Pleasant Road?
Yes. These 4-5 storey properties require specialist high-access scaffolds with multiple lift levels. We design each one individually as no two facades are identical on Mount Pleasant. Our team surveys the ground conditions, the setback from the road, and the internal floor heights before drawing up a scaffold specification.
What permits are needed for scaffolding in the Calverley Park conservation area?
Tunbridge Wells Borough Council requires prior notification for scaffold in this area. If the property is listed, a separate listed building consent may be needed for any fixings. We manage the full process — from submitting the initial notification through to confirming approval before our crew arrives on site.
