What We Built
A full height independent access scaffold across the whole elevation, standing on its own base rather than loading a period façade, with working lifts running from first floor to above the roofline. The structure steps down over the lower neighbouring bay rather than running level across it, so each part of the building gets the height it actually needs.
Debris netting across the full face, so nothing coming off the building reaches the street below.
At street level the scaffold is carried over the footway on standards set clear of the shop doors, leaving a covered route past the units underneath. The upper lifts run past sash windows and a stone cornice line, set out to clear that detail rather than bear on it, which is the difference between a façade you hand back clean and one that needs making good.
No Side Return, No Rear Access
There is no side return, no rear access and no yard. Everything the scaffold needed had to arrive and leave through the front, on a street where everything around it had to carry on.
Guildford High Street is pedestrianised, laid in stone, and lined with shops that trade seven days a week. Under this elevation there is a bookshop, a post office next door and a homeware store the other side. There is no side return, no rear access and no yard.
Every tube, board and fitting came in and went out through the front of a street full of people. The structure above was straightforward. Getting it up and down without closing a shop was the work.
Three Things That Had to Be True
The shops could not lose a trading day. A scaffold that blocks a shopfront costs the tenant money every day it stands, and on a high street the tenant is usually not the person paying for the scaffold. Entrances had to stay clear, windows had to stay visible, and the structure had to look like something a customer would walk under rather than around.
The public had to keep walking. There is no road to divert anyone onto. On a pedestrianised street the footway under the scaffold is not a diversion, it is the street.
The paving had to come back as it went out. Town centre paving is uneven by design and it belongs to the council. Base plates that spread load properly on tarmac can rock and bite on stone, and any damage is a bill.
